Free workshops on MEDIA LITERACY for young people (+14 years old) and University students

In Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram, but also in their everyday life outside of social media young people are confronted with images with contradictory messages. The workshops help students to critically examine pictures and the stories behind their creation instead of taking them for granted.

We work together with qualified speakers on media literacy and offer free workshops for school and University classes on exhibitions at f3 – freiraum für fotografie and at selected galleries and museums in Berlin. The duration and the content of the workshops can be individually discussed with the teachers and professors.

The workshops are held in German or English.

My World - A Photography Project for the Empowerment of Young People

My World is a highly successful educational project on our initiative, in cooperation with the Berlin DRK Westend Hospital, Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the Center for Vocational and Psychosocial Rehabilitation (ZSPR).

Using individually handmade pinhole cameras, the young people go exploring and visualizing their environment or creating portraits of themselves in self-selected poses in a professional photo studio built fort his purpose.

In this way, the young people get familiar with basics of photography such as the choice of an interesting image section and the use of shutter speeds and aperture. In addition they learn how to develop their images in a labatory für black and white photography.

The project serves for the empowerment of young people with considerable constraints in the school participation and community capacity. The creative use of photography helps them to form important personal and social skills, to strengthen their self-confidence and to give them a positive experience of their own performance. Particularly disadvantaged groups of "young people with mental-health problems" are better prepared for the demands in school and in working life and thereby sustainably integrated into society.

The project runs from 2013 to 2018 and will culminate in an exhibition and a book project.
